Bathymetric distribution of mass benthic diatom species (Bacillariophyta) at the Black Sea

Абстракт The importance of benthic diatoms (Bacillariophyta) in the Black Sea coastal ecosystem is due to their leading role in microphytobenthos in terms of abundance, species richness and transformation of energy throughout the main trophic levels in sublittoral communities. Since the photosynthesis effi ciency of diatoms is closely related to the spectral characteristics and intensity of sunlight, which depends on their dissipation in the water column, it is of interest to document patterns of bathymetric distribution of benthic diatoms in the Black Sea shelf zone. The current analysis is based on 522 samples collected along the South-Eastern, Southern and South-Western coast of Crimea (the Black Sea), as well as along the Northern Caucasus coast. Sampling was conducted within the range 0.5 to 75 m water depth. In total, the bathymetric distribution of 801 species and intraspecifi c taxa (IT) of benthic diatoms was analyzed. The maximum of species richness of Bacillariophyta (514 species and IT) was revealed at the depth range of 6–10 m, while minimum (70 species and IT) was observed at 51–75 m water depth. According to our data, the lower boundary of benthic diatoms occurrence in the Black Sea habitats was determined at 75 m. The list of the Black Sea diatom species (801 species and IT) was ranked by decreasing of their occurrence coeffi cient from 100% to 50%. In relation to insolation fl ow intensity, four complexes of diatoms species, such as: photophilous, mediophilous (mainly developed in middle depth range), sciaphilous (shade-tolerant) and indiff erent ones were distinguished, and the ecological peculiarities of species, belonging to the certain bathymetric-related complexes, were determined. Availability of diff erent strategies of photosynthesis effi ciency depending to the irradiance level was revealed for diff erent diatom species, indicating a wide distribution of benthic diatoms through the photic zone of the Black Sea coastal waters.
